Has anyone traveled by ferry between crete and santorini? how long is the trip? how scary are the ferries?
we are going on a honeymoon in late may on crete but would like to travel to santorini and fly back to athens from santorini. all flights from crete to santorini go thru athens and are quite expensive being that crete is 72 miles from santorini by boat. we would not mind the ferry if it is not too slow and rather safe. i know it is open sea and waves/weather can be a problem. any info pertaining to these matters and associated problems/solutions will be very helpful and praised. thank you

I’ve never travelled from Crete to Santorini, but last summer I went to Ios and Santorini by ferry from Athens and the ferry took about 3-3.5 hours.. It wasn’t scary at all.. the ferry was huge & completely safe!! Also the Greek Islands are in the Aegean Sea which is an embayment of the Mediterrean Sea so the water is very calm, there is hardly any waves at all!

Please do not worry at all. The distance is very sort and till you get on you will get off. The ferries are nice and there is not any dan ger. By the time You travel the weather will be fine and no waves will appear.
There is also a fast boat going from Heraklion to Santorini. When in Heraklion you can check this possibility too
I wish you a nice trip to our country and an unforgettable honeymoon vacation

Hahahah! You made my day! I’m Greek and I’m actually laughing. Of course the ferries are safe! In what kind of country do you think that you’re going? I’m teasing you, of course, but well, Greece is a civilised country and greek mariners are the best in the world. I can guarantee that!
And of course you can choose the one that suits you: from the slowest to the quickest which must be the so-called “flying cat” I think. You can check online for the ships. But just keep in mind that sometimes the quickest is the worst if you get sea-sick! And the most expensive, of course! Moreover you will probably won’t have the opportunity to get out in the warm sun and smell the sea, if you get the quickest one!!! Ahhhhh!!! I would give my life if I would be able to be in the middle of the Aegean sea in a boat!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Check the Minoan, the Hellenic Seaways, Blue Star ferries and ANEK. They are the sea companies to Crete, as far as I remember…

I have been on many Greek ferries, but never on one that I would call “scary”. There is nothing to be afraid of. Some boats are newer and faster than others, but all are OK. Try to find a “high speed” boat if you can….u will get there faster…
